The mechanism
A train of meshed gears turns on the plate. Beside it, clear of the teeth by a hair, one more gear idles at a speed of its own. Because the two speeds differ, its teeth creep steadily across the gaps in the gear it is meant to join.

The tolerance
Misalignment is measured in tooth pitches. At zero the teeth face the gaps exactly and the contact point lights brass. Tap inside the band and the gear drops in with a clunk. Tap outside it and the train jams.

- The train. Gears already meshed. They turn as one and never drift apart.
- (2)
- The loose gear. Idles a hair clear of (1), turning at a speed of its own.
- (3)
- The contact point. Lights brass as the teeth of (2) close on the gaps in (1). Tap anywhere while it is lit.
Fault condition: a tap outside the band, or (2) left to overspeed. The train jams and the run ends.
